I know - it's been awhile......however, things are happening! What, you ask? Well, let's just say there is some excitement in the making.....and it has to do with a possible "new" venue for knitters and crocheters in Rogersville, TN. Stay tuned.

Cambridge (Ontario) gives its Main Street bridge a knitted hug:

CAMBRIDGE — It was an unexpectedly beautiful sight for many Saturday on Cambridge’s Main Street bridge.

The entire concrete structure was wrapped in a warm, knitted hug courtesy of the Knit Cambridge installation.

“They’re keeping it warm for the winter,” 10-year-old Isabel Skinner said.

The official opening of the art project in the Galt section of Cambridge attracted hundreds of visitors to see Sue Sturdy, artist-in-residence at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts, unveil her impressive knitted vision.

“It’s so unusual, it’s beautiful,” Sturdy said.

About 16,000 plastic zip ties hold thousands of knitted afghans, scarves, socks, hats and blankets to the cold concrete of the bridge. Some of the pieces arrived from as far away as Australia and New Zealand.

Volunteers helped Sturdy sew together all the knitted scarves to wrap around the arches, totalling nearly 830 metres. Between Tuesday and Friday, about 30 volunteers helped Sue attach the pieces to the bridge.

It is a truly collaborative piece of community art.

Many in attendance at the opening were impressed by the scope of the project.

Bruce Scholl and his brother Robert said they just had to stop to see the bridge on their way to a Cambridge Winterhawks game.

“Where did they get the patience?” Robert asked.

Aside from offering knitting fans a way to exercise their passion on a massive scale, Sturdy intends the piece to remind people of Cambridge’s strong history in the textile industry.

It was also a way for people to “declutter and decorate,” she said.

Friday night, before the official opening, a few hats were stolen from the bridge, but Sturdy wasn’t fazed.

The entire installation will be up until Sept. 27 when it is to be removed — with the help of many volunteers, Sturdy hopes — to be laundered.

Afterwards, many of the pieces will be distributed to local charities.

The scarves will be refashioned to be auctioned off at the Tie One on Party, benefitting the Arts Guild at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts, the YWCA and the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank.

For now, residents of Cambridge can enjoy a warmer bridge as the month gets colder.

“Cambridge will never be the same,” regional councillor Claudette Millar told Sturdy.

Hello!!! It's been quite awhile since I've posted on this blog!! Our knitting group has since moved venues as well as decreased in numbers for one reason or another. First let me say that we lost one of our special members, Mary Ruth. She was such a very kind lady - she will be missed by all.

JUST WANTED TO UPDATE EVERYONE ON SOME EXCITING KNITTING NEWS. AVERAGE KNITTERS AT THE LIBRARY HAS BEEN ABOUT 6-7 WEEKLY, SO A NICE GROUP WITH THEIR OWN LITTLE SPECIAL CORNER. AS THE LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED, THERE WILL BE NO KNITTING ON APRIL 3RD OR APRIL 7TH (EVENING CLASS). HOWEVER, THE LIBRARIAN WANTS TO LEARN TO KNIT SOCKS, SO GUESS WHAT......................THERE IS GOING TO BE A SOCK CLASS - THAT IS GREAT.

THE INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES WILL BEGIN AFTER EASTER. KNITTERS WILL NEED 5 WOODEN DOUBLE POINT NEEDLES - SIZE 2 - AND AT LEAST 416 YARDS OF SOCK YARN. SOME SKEINS NOW HOLD ENOUGH YARN FOR A PAIR OF SOCKS. IF THEY NEED TO BUY 2 SKEINS AND THE YARDAGE IS CLOSE - IT IS ADVISABLE TO BUY 3 SKEINS. THIS WILL BE FOR A REGULAR WOMAN'S SOCK. NATURALLY, IF YOU WANT YOUR SOCK TO BE LONGER OR LARGER, YOU WILL NEED MORE YARN AND POSSIBLY LARGER NEEDLES. I'M SURE IF YOU HAVE FURTHER QUESTIONS ON THIS, REN WOULD NOT MIND YOU CALLING AT THE EXTENSION OFFICE FOR ADVICE. SHE ALSO ADVISES TO DEFINITELY GET WOODEN NEEDLES, AS METAL WILL NEVER STAY PUT!!!!

Geez, what is my problem??? I still haven't made it to our new knitting venue. Maybe next week. Thursday my sinuses made me feel absolutely terrible, but Friday all improved. However, our computer crashed at our store, so off I went to see what I could do - WHICH ENDED UP BEING TAKEN TO THE COMPUTER HOSPITAL. Yikes - just what I need right now. Oh well, no use crying over spilled milk.....onward and forward.........

Dot had worked on and completed a beautiful, yet "sissified" - HER WORDS - outfit for her dog, Foster. She told me in an email that everyone wanted to see Foster in his ensemble. Well Dot, I honestly think you should have just brought Foster for all to see him all dolled up!!!!!! Dot also emailed me that she is now knitting a more masculine outfit. Maybe we'll get to see that one "in person". On that note, I leave you with Foster all dressed up and wondering where to go!!!! Thanks Dot.....

Seeing that we are trying to come together as Americans and support the new political regime the best we can, I ran across this and thought you might enjoy a very diverse knitting project:
From DailyServing; "The Knitting Machine is just one of artist Dave Cole's large scale projects that consist of ambitiously knitting unconventional materials. In this particular piece Cole uses two excavation tractors equipped with 20' knitting needles to assemble a giant American flag in time for the 4th of July (2005). This work was part of larger exhibition and artist residence held at Mass Moca, North Adams, Mass. Cole describes the work as "combining the feminized domestic American tradition of knitting with the grandiose gesture of construction".

I have finally made myself get the scarf for the 2009 Special Winter Olympics ready to be mailed. I don't know why I haven't taken care of it before now - maybe because the deadline isn't until January and I had so many other things to do first. Well, now that packages are wrapped, the tree is up and cards are mailed, I guess it was just the thing to do. Also, I think I kind of thought it wasn't that great to even send, but hey - I made it by hand - which was the main requirement - and I made it with love. The excitement of sending something handmade to these athletes in hopes that one of them might wear it and one of them might just feel a tad better after receiving something from a total stranger because that stranger wanted to make a difference.....on that note...................

If you missed the first post about this....The Special Olympics World Winter Games Scarf Project got its start at the 2008 Special Olympics Invitational Games - held last February in Boise to test-drive various sporting venues - when organizers decided to give out hand-stitched scarves as gifts to the athletes. The first goal was to provide the athletes with a memento of the occasion.

The second goal was to encourage involvement and support for the upcoming games across the host state. They locally asked for 600 scarves and received more than 1,000. The 2009 goal is 5,000.

You are requested to place your finished scarf (made with Red Heart Supersave Yarn in Delft Blue and White - colors of the Special Olympics) in a plastic bag along with a card with your name and address. You also need to include a second card with an inspirational message for the athlete. Package this up and mail to:

OUR HOLIDAY GATHERING

Yesterday, the Knitting Souls Together group met at Ren's house for a holiday gathering. What a gracious hostess Ren is and what a beautifully decorated home!!!! She is definitely the hostess with the mostest!!!!!!

All brought finger foods and a knitting project and gathered cozily in Ren's absolutely wonderful sunporch.

What a view - we all basically decided that we were just going to stay and would be perfectly happy to just stay in this room - of course the wide array of finger foods displayed made it an easy decision.

We played, under Ren's direction, number bingo and ALL ended up winning and picking a gift from the enticing gift basket.

All games and knitting aside, prior to eating, Ruby was presented with a birthday surprise goodie, including a chorus of "Happy Birthday". Ruby's birthday is actually next Thursday, the 18th, and was totally surprised. I won't reveal her age, I'll just tell you, she has definitely aged with total grace and beauty - oops the secret is out - the picture reveals all!!!!!!

AND, speaking of birthdays, I made a PROMISE YESTERDAY that I would not say a thing, however, I DID NOT promise I wouldn't say something on the blog. Sorry, Ren - you are just too nice to let this pass. I would like to wish Ren a very, very Happy Birthday from yesterday!!!! Yes, you read that right. Yesterday was Ren's birthday and we did not know it. Later in the day, I was standing in the kitchen door talking to Ren and her daughter, Lindsey and spotted a slew of birthday cards displayed in the dining room. When I asked Ren if she had just "HAD" a birthday, she shushed me quickly and made me promise not to say anything because it was on that very day. She did not want to take away from Ruby!!!! That's how Ren is - thoughtful of all around her all of the time. I know the others would want to say this also - again - HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROM THE KNITTING SOULS TOGETHER GROUP!!!!!!!!!

Moving right along, we had a very special, renowed visitor - I shouldn't say visitor, as this is his abode. FONZIE!!!! What a delight to meet Fonzie in person after following his antics on Ren's blog. He made sure to make everyone feel welcomed as he checked us out individually. He is definitely a cutie.

It has been a great joy knitting together as we did throughout the summer and fall. Ren and I both hope that everyone joins together at the H.B. Stamps library in January 2009. The new librarian has graciously invited us to knit together on Friday mornings and hopes to see our group grow. Currently, there is a new knitting group at the library on Tuesday evenings. Perhaps those knitters might visit us on a Friday and us visit them as well on a Tuesday evening. The possibilities are endless. All we know is we want to knit, as I'm sure every knitter feels the same and wants the camraderie of other knitters.

By the way - I know I haven't been posting very much on this blog - I will try to do better after the holidays. What I would really like is for some of our knitters that are online at home - YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE - to email me some of your projects that you are working on. It's not just about me!!!!! So, think about it and let me brag on your projects. Have a subject you want to know more about - email me and I'll definitely do my homework and see what I can find out. I'm sure there are others out there that have the same questions. So, let's all try together to keep this going.

KNIT IT, TEAR IT OUT, KNIT IT AGAIN?

I had to laugh reading Ren's - Fonzie Knits - blog - "Three rows knitted, four rows out". That is SO common in almost any craft you do. I made a comment on Ren's blog that whenever I have to take something out because of a mistake, after taking it out, I just pretend that I never did it in the first place and just go on with it. It's a mind thing - ha ha.

This leads to a scarf that I'm now knitting. Prior to this scarf, I was using this yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease, to knit the Diagonal Lace scarf that Ren introduced to our knitting group on one of the first classes. She had one that she had knitting and I feel immediately in love with it - I HAD TO KNIT THAT SCARF. Well, I started on it, it was a new technique to me and believe me, if you took your mind off of it for a second, you were either starting over and trying to figure out just where you were. So, needless to say, I got pretty good at this technique, because I believe I took it completely out 3 times. Then I really started moving on it. I probably have about a fourth of it completed and for whatever reason, put it aside. Not a wise thing to do. When I picked it up about 2-3 months later, maybe not quite that long, I couldn't remember how to do it and it was like starting from scratch. All of a sudden, I didn't like it anymore, it seemed too wide - it seemed like too much work and SO - I took it out.

I then found another pattern - not as wide that I'm now working on - it is a Sampler Scarf and so far I think I like it!!! So, no matter what, don't give up - if you aren't happy with what you are working on and know that you will not like the finished product - do something else. Or, if you still think you will like the project - make yourself fix the mistake and keep going.

UPDATE ON DESTINATION

After blogging about Pam almost being there, I checked my email and she has safely arrived in Seattle, at her daughter's. I'm sure ALL family members are relieved.

I feel like I've been on the road with her, in anticipation of her safe arrival. What a trip.

Well, hope you all have enjoyed travelling with Pam. I hope all goes well with the Wedding preparations and the Wedding, as I'm sure they will. Juli now has her Mom with her for every step of the way - what more could a daughter want????

PAM IS WHERE?

Pam has almost reached her destination. Last night she called and she had just arrived in Spokane, Washington. Sounding tired, naturally from driving cross country - Pam was getting ready to order a pizza and sit back and try to rest up. One more day and she's got this journey beat. Hard to believe, really, that one day you are in Tennessee and voile', there you are on the West Coast (almost).

Today, when Pam and Echo climb back in the car, they have about 5-6 hours to drive to their destination - Seattle or Olympia, Washington.

We're glad you made it safe and sound - it gave me something interesting to write about and oh yeah, we miss you!!!!

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS PAM - DAY 6

BEFORE I tell you where Pam is - I've got to relay a little story about "Pam". No, Pam - I won't tell them that story - ha ha ha ha ha. Anyway, Ren stopped in my office today and while chatting mentioned that a friend of hers happened to mention in a conversation, "Who is Pam", out of the blue. Ren had no idea of what or who she meant and finally after a little more - realized that she meant "Knitting Pam". How funny - in writing about Pam's travels, never did I even think about anyone outside of our knitting group reading this blog. Honestly, when you blog, you just do it and really NEVER think anyone will read it, let alone someone you don't even know. So, just in case there is someone else out there reading this that doesn't know who Pam is............Pam is a member of our Knitting Souls Together group and is on a travelling adventure. She is on her way to the state of Washington to help with the details of and attend her daughter, Juli's, wedding in December. And to beat it all, she is making this journey across country from our small southern town to the West Coast with just herself and her dog, Echo. What an adventurer Pam is - talk about free spirit - that's our Pam. Being close friends, I feel funny that she is so far away and on her own, but I try to not worry because I know she is having a good time - or at least that's what she keeps telling me - ha ha ha.

So, where is she now? Last night, Pam called and caught me right before I left the house to go practice handbells at Church. She had arrived safe and sound in Billings, MT. She sounded tired, but jubilant in the fact that she has travelled over that 2,000 mile mark....wow. She stated that Echo was basically passed out on the Queen size bed - ha ha ha - Echo is such a trooper.

So, as far as trips go, all I can say is Pam is moving right along........stay tuned................................................

OH - before I end this post, I MUST share with you a part of our telephone conversation last night. I told Pam that I enjoyed seeing the pictures that she had posted on her blog (if you haven't read Pam's blog - look on the left side of this blog and you'll see a place that says Pam's Blog - click on that and it will take you to her blog) but there was just something about them that bothered me!!!! She was driving on a 4 lane highway when she took them!!!!! OMG!!!! So I asked her PLEASE - PULL OFF OF THE ROAD TO TAKE THE PICTURES - HA HA HA - WHAT A GIRL!!!!!!!!!

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS PAM - DAY 5

I'm sure Pam won't mind, but I thought I would share in her own words what her path is today - from an email yesterday:

I have been a weather channel junkie today (apart from the time I spent on the couch, examining the inside of my eyelids). The way west is a torturous journey (historically speaking). We don't want another Donner Pass debacle here.

This evening, the forecast is getting more defined. I-80 to Salt Lake City tomorrow is a dicey proposition. Sleet, snow, mix of rain and frozen stuff falling from the sky, all 500 miles from Denver to Moroni's Last Stand. From there, though, all sunny skies and dry weather from Thursday on, through Idaho, Oregon (and the lure of the Columbia River Valley) and Wash.

My other choice is I-25 north to I-90, a relatively straight shot with a jog west and up to Billings. Clear until Casper, WY, then rain to Billings in the afternoon. Then some rain on Thursday to Butte (but no snow) and then Friday, clear as a bell into the Pac NW coast.

So, I pondered. And I made a reservation at the Motel 6 in Billings, MT., so I have a place for Echo and me to sleep tomorrow night.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS PAM - DAY 3

While going outside tonight (around 8:15 pm) to walk one of the pups, my cell phone rang and I couldn't get it out of my pocket due to the anxious dog, gloves and layers of clothes. Finally, after seeing what call I missed, trying to call it back and receiving a call while trying to do this - I FINALLY talked to Pam. She has reached Denver, CO. after starting out around 6:00 am and driving until 3:00 pm. The weather there is in the 40's and cloudy. However, the trek there wasn't exactly all easy driving. Pam said that she drove in snow for about 120 miles. Whew - I'm glad she is there, safe and sound.

Tomorrow, she will study the weather and decide her route to her next destination. What a journey. Day by day - I informed her that she must be sending some of that weather this way since they are saying locally we may get a little snow Saturday night into Sunday!!! Oh well - we'll see.

Update on Pam - I just talked to her and she is right below Kansas City, MO. She is going to visit friends for dinner and was looking for Peculiar, MO while we were chatting. She said it is cold and drizzily there.

Tomorrow, weather permitting, Pam hopes to make it to Denver, CO. Drive carefully friend - you are in our prayers!!

ADVENTURES OF PAM

For those of you that don't go to Pam's blog - today is her day of departure (not sure when this post will be dated - started it on Saturday and am now working on it on Sunday)!! She's off to experience the adventures of crossing our glorious country. Pam and Echo. What a brave woman!!!! I've told her numerous times - BE CAREFUL - ha ha - I know she will be, but I still worry. I also envy her to a point. The thoughts of just "taking off" - wow - wash your mind clear of everything and just drive, baby, drive.

I received an email from Pam this morning. Yesterday, after completing numerous "end-tying" of things to get the house ready, Pam drove to Lexington, KY to spend the day and evening with Bill's cousin, Jeanie. They dined on homemade Chicken Fettucine Alfredo (low fat version), walked Echo, had an afternoon nap and then a pleasant evening of conversation.

Today, Pam continues her journey heading to the midwest. I will wait awhile and give her a call to check on her - I warned her that I would be doing this. Really, I do have a genuine reason to constantly check on her - I'm writing her cross country journey chronicles - LOL. I will post updates as I get them.

Materials: Fiona by Fezo (or comparable)

Approximately 246 yards

2 skeins

Cast on 3 stitches. Knit 1 row

Next row: knit 1, make 1, knit to end

Repeat this row every row until you run out, leaving enough for the bind off.

INCREASING - MAKING A SIMPLE INCREASE (knitting into the front and back of the stitch):
Kfb = knit in front and back of st

An easy way to add a stitch is to use an existing stitch. Insert the right needle into the stitch, wrap the yarn around the needle and pull through as for a normal knit stitch, elongating the loop slightly. Don't pull the stitch over the left needle yet.

Bring the top of the right needle around to the back and knit into the back loop of the stitch as shown (see the FAQ on knitting into the back loop for more detail). You now have two stitches on the right needle.

I'm sure you all understand how busy life gets - so please forgive me for not posting lately. I'll think about it and whoosh - there goes another day.

Friday knitting is going well. We have about 9 regulars - which I think is pretty good. Last Friday, I was not there, as well as Pam and Andrea. This Friday and next Friday, I will be unable to attend due to being out of state both times. Ren will be there this Friday, but will be unable to be there next Friday.

SO, NEXT FRIDAY, THERE WILL BE NO KNITTING!!!! WE WILL RESUME ON HALLOWEEN - YIKES!!!! I THINK WE SHOULD DRESS UP - DARE YOU!!!!!!!!! SEE YOU THEN!!!!!!

TREE HUGGERS

I bet you are thinking something "environmental" with that title - well, in a way, you are right! In Columbus, Indiana, they have decided to wrap trees in yarn. It was part of an art project and turned into so much more. Go to the link below the next picture to read the article:

Just in case you can't go to the link - what this was about was a group of women that have been knitting together for a few years, decided to enter a community art project contest and decided to cover the downtown tree trunks with knitting. From there, the creative juices started flowing. One tree actually had hats and was named: "Need a Hat, Take a Hat; Have a Hat, Leave a Hat". It actually had hats attached with safety pins for the purpose of sharing with the needy. The winner of the contest, Bloomin' Fun, won $1,000. The winnings were donated to the Love Chapel. Next year, they plan to expand the project. I've also included a link that is a slideshow of the trees. Please take the time to look at it and if you have any trouble with it - let me know. SCARF PROJECT

When Ren brought in her latest issue of Knit Simple about a month ago - I looked at it briefly and thought, "OH, I've got to get that magazine". Come to think of it, when Ren brought in her 365 Stitch A Day Calendar, I looked at it briefly and thought, "OH, I've got to get that" - so, REN, would you please stop bringing neat stuff in - I can't afford it - LOL!!!!!

Ok - back to the subject of this post. While perusing this new issue of wonderful pictures and articles, I came across an interesting article that I wanted to share. It's about donating your time and knitting scarves for the 2009 Special Olympic Athletes. Their goal is 5,000 - one for each athlete. They are asking that they all be knitted or crocheted in Red Heart 0885, Delft Blue and 0311, White. One note - the magazine says 0311 - White, while the website, I'll post further down, says 0316 - Soft White - I'm sure either would do. They want to keep the same colors for all - which represents the Special Olympics. Now how neat is that? You can knit or crochet these scarves, with a required estimated size of 4-1/2" X 50", in any pattern you like. The finished project then needs to be placed in a plastic bag, along with a note card with your Name & Address on it. You are also supposed to include - on a separate card from your Name card - a personal note for the athlete. Is this not a wonderful project? Currently, they have about 1,000 and need to reach their goal of 5,000 by January 15, 2009 - which is the deadline for your scarf to reach the following address:

Why don't you think about it? I believe I'm going to head to Wal Mart in the morning to see if they have these colors and get started on one. What a warm feeling to know that you may have given an athlete in the Special Olympics a small little "feel good" boost when they wrap that scarf around their neck. Hey, you might even be able to spot yours while you watch - if they are broadcast on TV.

**A SPECIAL NOTE** - As most of you know, working with most Red Heart Yarns - it is not the softest yarn. However, as we have discussed in our knitting group, and I also just read it on a forum on Ravelry, www.ravelry.com, the best thing to do PRIOR to shipping your scarf, is to wash it in the washing machine with liquid softener and then put in the dryer. It was suggested that you may have to do this twice to soften it up. Just use your best judgment.

A VISITOR

It's always nice to have visitors to our knitting group. This past Friday, we had the pleasure to welcome Kathryn's daughter, Rebecca. Rebecca was in for a visit all the way from Portland, OR. What was so neat about the visit was RIGHT AWAY Rebecca said she felt like she knew everyone because she reads the blog. Thanks Rebecca, I take that as a complement!!!!

I hate we didn't get more time to chat - I would have loved to ask more about where you live - seems like on the other side of the world to me - LOL. I really think it would have been great if she had just stood up and given a presentation about her life and then we could have asked questions - ha ha - just kidding, or am I? Like I said, we love visitors and new information!!!!!

Rebecca also brought a beautiful project that she is working on - we just LOVE to see different projects that others are making - AND, you'll have to email me a picture (get my email from your Mother) when you are finished and I'll post it. Rebecca has designed and is making a hook rug. It is gorgeous - the picture proves the point.

We also had another treat to feast our eyes on. Andrea and her husband, Lynn, went on their honeymoon last week to Pigeon Forge and Cherokee, NC. Yep, after 18 years of marriage, they were blessed with this trip and had a wonderful time. You could see it in her face. They had some wonderful "olde tyme" pictures made and what a memory to look back on when they think of this special time together. Congratulations on your 18 years together and, oh yes, congratulations on your new van. You had a great week!!!!!

KNITTING SOULS GROUP

Our group has settled into a nice every Friday morning knitting group. We come to relax and chat and show what knitting projects we have completed during the week.

Pam seems to win the award for accomplishing the most!!!!!! She has definitely made some neat items.

Now yesterday was a tad different. I believe we made the mistake of talking about politics, people that can and won't work and it went on from there. Now, put 10 women together in a room and start with these subjects. By the time we left, we were all still laughing, HOWEVER, we did make the comment that it wasn't quite as relaxing as it's been in the past. This Presidential election is going to get the best of all of this year - I'll be glad when it's over - MAYBE - depends on the outcome - LOL!!! AND, I'm NOT going to voice my opinion of who should win on this blog, no, I wouldn't do that - would I? I'll just say, SHE was a good pick!!!

AND, as you may have noticed, I haven't been posting too much lately. Let me tell you why. My husband and I have completely lost our minds - as of last Friday - a week ago - we now are the proud "Puppy Parents" of Buddy and Molly - two 12 (now 13) week old puppies. Whew...........................ha ha ha. The dark faced pup is the female (Molly) and the orange is the male (Buddy). They have succeeded in getting us off of the sofa - which is a good habit to break. By the way, they are Brittany Spaniels.

WHAT IS FELTING?

The Felt Formula Felting is not always a precise science. That is because it is achieved by exposing wool to water, heat, and agitation, but the amount of each of these elements plays a part in the way the piece felts.

Felting can be done in the sink, but washing machines can work great too, and they do the job much quicker. However, each washing machine is different, and the amount your machine felts a piece after one cycle may be different than your neighbors’. So, while it’s not hard, be sure to follow the specific felting instructions of the piece you are making, and check your piece a few times during your felting process to make sure you are getting the desired results.

Felting Facts Felting a knit or crochet piece makes it SHRINK. Therefore, the piece you knit or crochet will be much bigger than your felted piece will ultimately be. How much does it shrink? It depends since there are so many factors that go into it – how hot your water is, how hard you water is, how much it is agitated, the amount and kind of soap you use, what color the yarn is (really, it’s a fact!) whether it is the third Tuesday of the month (just kidding)... You can felt your piece more or less. If you felt it just a little (maybe by taking it out of your machine after half a cycle), you will still have stitch definition. If you felt it more, you won’t. Basically, here are the steps:

1. Wash in warm water with soap.

Why soap? It actually speeds up the felting process!

Felting can often be improved by adding baking soda or washing soda to the water!

What about the rest of the laundry? Throw it in! Though it may not be recommended in the directions for all felting projects, washing felted things with other laundry can speed up the process! Why? Agitation is another important element for the felting, and the rest of your laundry does just that (be sure to check out the TIPS below)!

2. Rinse in cool water

Rinsing in cool water sort of “locks” the fibers in place. Most people have a warm wash/cool rinse setting on their machines (easy, huh?)

3. Air dry

If you are making a piece that needs to conform to a particular shape (say, a rectangle piece for a bag), it will likely be lopsided when it comes out of the dryer. Adjust it to the right shape BEFORE you let it dry (remember: once felted, felted for life) or pin it into shape on a blocking board and let it dry there – yup, blocking is important in felting, too.

TIPS

WASHING: When washing your felted piece with other clothing, try putting it in a mesh lingerie bag – it will still get the benefit of agitation from the other clothes, but won’t get stuck!

MORE WASHING: be sure the clothing you put it with won’t run (like colors), and they don’t pill (or the fibers that come off could wind up in your felt!
RELAX! Mistakes in your handwork won’t show up after felted, so relax!

ONE OF A KIND: Don’t worry if you piece looks slightly different than the picture! So many factors go into felting that it is inevitable it WILL look a little different. But that’s the beauty of it – your piece is completely unique!

GAUGE GRATIFICATION: Because felting is indeed pretty different every time you do it, gauge is extremely important. Sometimes, to help control the process, patterns will have you make a gauge swatch, then felt it and take measurements before AND after. That way, you know to work with your machine. If you need it to felt LESS, remove it from the machine earlier. If MORE, leave it in for longer – maybe you need to run it again!

CHECK IT: Check your piece a number of times if felting in the washing machine to make sure it’s just right – not too much, not too little. HAVE FUN!

FELTING FACTOR: It is a good idea to knit a swatch to see how your machine felts. Make a square swatch, then throw it in your machine. Check it a number of times before the end of the cycle to get a sense of your particular machine’s “felting factor.”

CUT IT OUT! Since felting “fuses” the fibers together, you can do something with it you cannot do with knit or crochet pieces – you can CUT IT! Believe it or not, if your piece is truly felted, it won’t unravel. That means you can cut into the bottom to make a cute fringe, you can cut strips of felted fabric and weave them back together, sky’s the limit!

MIX IT UP: Mixing yarns is really fun with felting. Try making a swatch with one strand of fun fur and Lion Wool at the bottom, then switch entirely to Lion Wool. Now felt it. The results are amazing, because the FUN FUR won’t felt,. Talk about FURRY EFFECTS. Try other yarn combos to see what looks coolest – remember, only the wool will felt, so you can create great textural differences with mixing.

HAVE FUN: There’s no limit to this cool craft, so play around and let your imagination be your guide!

I was notified today that Doc McConnell passed away this morning. Doc had suffered a stroke last Sunday. COMPULSIVE YARN BUYING

Ren gave this to me and laughingly asked if I wanted to post it on the blog...........it is SO true:

..you go to a yarn store with a friend and you usually carry more yarn out of the store than your friend when you leave.

..you wake up the morning after, unable to remember how much yarn you bought, how much you spent for it, or where you stashed it.

..you inexplicably grab hanks of yarn from store shelves just to touch and smell; you occasionally talk to it.

..you've bought the same pattern book or knitting supply at least twice without knowing it.

..when you go to the yarn store after work, after arriving home late, you lie about where you've been, telling your SOs you were at a bar.

..you are unable to travel to a new town without a quick scan of the Yellow Pages and a not so quick checking out of the local yarn shops; in fact, you often tack on a day of travel and bring an empty suitcase--just in case!

..you've moved to larger homes just so you have more space to stash your stash.

..you've bought yarn simply because it was on sale.

..when at a garage sale, the first thing you look for is yarn/knitting supplies.

..you have been reprimanded on the job--for knitting.

..you and your SOs have "discussed" your yarn buying and knitting habits.

..you've trained your SOs not to talk while you are counting and to wait patiently while you finish that one more row.

..you've mastered knitting in the dark (at movie theatres), at red lights while driving, and, of course, while doing just about anything else.

..panic sets in when you are out in a public place with nothing to knit.

..you have lied about how much yarn you've bought.

..you have devised grand and devious schemes for getting your yarn in the house to avoid your SOs scrutiny.

..your yarn buying has embarrassed your family or friends.

..when a stranger walks into your home, his or her first words are usually a comment about your yarn.

..you have at least six projects beside each place in the house where you are known to sit and sleep.

..when a shop owner has been unable to locate a certain item in the store, you are able to find it.

KNITTING ON FRIDAY

As everything in life, our group has changed. We've gone from "I don't know if I can do that" to "What's everyone working on" - it has worked out as Ren and I hoped it would.

This Friday, Ren was unable to attend - her presence was noticeably absent!!!! So those of us that showed up, gathered together, knitting and chatted pleasantly. We had a surprise cell phone call from Hannah - in between her in-service day at school. She was missed greatly, as she adds so much to our group. Thanks for calling Hannah - we were definitely thinking of you and now you proved that you were thinking of us. Hopefully, we'll get that Monday evening class going so that you and Maggie can again join us.

Kathryn brought some yummy cookies. She has sent me the recipe as an attachment that I haven't been able to open yet. When I get it open - I'll post it.

OUR GUEST SPEAKER

Last week, we had a surprise guest, Lynn Sloan - Andrea's husband. I asked Andrea if he came along to make sure she was really knitting - ha ha - just kidding. Then, several of us tried our best to try to get Lynn to learn to knit - that sure didn't work!!!!

Andrea has such a great personality and smile, and Lynn is just as nice. What a great pair. Anyway.....Lynn brought some of his "finds" to share with us. He has come into the possession of several wonderful relics. From one that appears to be an ancient, possible Indian, headstone, to tools and a wonderful book of old publications that gave you all kinds of ideas to entertain properly as well as home items and instructions. Quite some finds. Thanks for taking the time to share these with us!!!!

CABLES AND GAUGE

BEFORE I BEGIN, LET ME START BY SAYING A BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ANDREA!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday, at our first meeting of "just" the knitting group, Ren decided she had, still yet, more knitting information and guidance to pass along (WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT HER?). She taught us to cable and informed us of the importance of gauge.

The cable stitch can actually create fear at the thoughts of actually doing it!!!! I mean, look at that stitch - there is NO WAY something that complicated looking can be easy. BUT, guess what - IT IS. I know some will say it is not easy, but I think a better description of it, especially when you first start trying it, is that it is a little awkward. And, just paying attention, as you can see Rebecca is deep in thought on this subject, will pay off in the end. If you try it and have trouble, don't forget, you can go to one of many helpful sites, including You Tube, and watch someone go slowly through the steps.

Gauge - now there is a very important subject, especially if you are knitting something to wear. Think about it - you spend all of that money on "nice" yarn, spend all of that time on working the pattern and voile', it doesn't fit!!!!! This is why gauge is so crucial. And, to get your gauge, you should swatch. Now, swatching doesn't bother me - remember, I'm the one that's perfectly satisfied just knitting dishcloths, but even Ren said she doesn't like to swatch, but still does. You have to, to make sure that your certain number of stitches per inch match up to what the pattern says about the number of stitches per inch. If you don't and yours is different from the pattern, then you are wasting your time going by the size on the pattern. I had to laugh - on Ravelry (http://www.ravelry.com/) there is even a group that do nothing but swatch. And, I joined that group - LOL. I even bought the 365 Knitting Stitches A Year Perpetual Calendar (after see and drooling over Ren's) so I could eventually, in this lifetime or the next three, knit/swatch some of those squares. They are just so pretty. But, getting back to the subject, if you decide to jump in and make a sweather, please take the time to swatch to see if you are on target for the gauge. And, know that if you have too many stitches in your swatch, then you need to switch to a larger needle and swatch again. And, if you don't have enough stitches in your measurement, you will need to switch to smaller needles and YES, swatch again. You just can't swatch too much. :-)

AND, I would also like to say that we have some extremely talented members in our group. Robin is in the process of making a quilt and had a question for one of the other members. I just had to snap a picture of her work - it is absolutely gorgeous. Can't wait to see the finished product - hopefully, she will bring it in and show us:

It's so hard to believe that our class has begun and ended - just technically, but not officially!!! Ren and I both had a good time and really bonded over this joint venture - I'm glad we will be able to continue as a knitting group on Friday mornings. Attendance was down today as many of our group are off and about on vacations. Hopefully, some will be able to continue knitting with us. For those that can't continue on Fridays (no, I'm not pointing you out - Hannah & Maggie), we are hoping to start another class/group on Monday evenings. As soon as we know - we'll let you know. If all goes well, we'll begin in September. So - thanks to all that have made this class possible and please, please, come back if you are able.

DISHCLOTH INFO

As I am still hooked on dishcloths, I have been promising to write about a couple of things concerning their care and end results.

First off, lets talk about weaving in the loose ends after you have finished binding off the edge. The best method I've seen (no, I've not tried it yet), is the Russian Join. If you will go to this link, it has very good pictures along with the explanation.

Second, is the subject of setting the color - especially, since there are some bright color combinations out there, along with the fact that laundering will zap that color quickly. From what I have read and also discussed with Heleen, the following seems to be the best suggestion:

Pour vinegar into a container with warm water and soak the dishcloth for an hour or so. Remove from water and roll up in a towel to remove excess water - DO NOT RING. Let dishcloth air dry. After this procedure is complete, you can launder as normal. To add on to this info - you could play it safe and use the detergents that are for dark laundry only - another suggestion from Heleen.

If you are giving the dishcloth as a gift, you may want to include a note explaining how to keep the color bright.

Hope this helps. In fact, I hope this works - LOL. I guess, one way or another, we'll all find out sooner or later. If any of you have a better suggestion, by all means, PLEASE let me know.

ONE MORE CLASS????

It's just hard to believe that we have one more class, or wait - do we? Maybe not - in fact, we have decided to see if we can just continue on knitting on Friday mornings. If we do, I think we are going to change our format a little and go from actually being "just" a class to actually working on projects. We discussed that if all goes as planned, maybe 2 Fridays, we'll work on agreed upon projects and the other 2 Fridays can be free for alls. So, stay tuned, this blog isn't over yet!!!!!!!

We were very pleased to welcome a new member today. Angie knits and is currently working on a beautiful shawl. I met Angie last Friday and immediately liked her - she is so full of life (and maybe a little mischief too - LOL). We were looking at one of the caps that was finished and she wanted to try it on and was saying something like maybe not to take her picture, but seeing that I was trying to concentrate on what I was doing, I'm not quite sure if that was her comment or not - sorry Angie - you just looked too cute NOT to be on our blog - anyway, now you are one of us.....................

Ren brought some of the squares that are being worked up for Warm Up America and we thought they were so pretty laid out that we wanted everyone to see them. We hope that the group will take on this project, either with the group or on our own. HEALTHY HANDS

As with anything we do for long periods of time - it can take it's toll on whatever body part you are using. I've noticed that my hands sometimes stiffen up when I knit for long periods of time. Usually, I can stretch them and work it out. When I saw this article, I thought it might be a good idea to alert everyone on some preventitive measures to take if you plan to knit and/or crochet for awhile:

The 5-5-5- Workout:5 Exercises in 5 Minutes for 5 FingersSimple Exercises for Hands That Craft Limber up before you begin your crafting session with these brief exercises that are meant to stretch muscles and tendons; they are not an aerobic workout for the hands. Please be gentle. Wear the Handeze Glove while performing these simple exercises. The body heat generated from the exercises will increase the beneficial effects of the glove.

Hand Massage

With the thumb of the left hand, massage the palm of the right hand. At the same time, wrap the fingers of the left hand round the outside of the right hand and massage. Massage for one minute. Repeat with opposite hand.

Clench and Fan

Clench your hand into a tight fist and hold for five seconds. Release smoothly, extending the thumb and fingers into a fully stretched position and hold for five seconds. Repeat five times for each hand.

Thumb Stretch

With the left hand, gently pull the thumb of the right hand away from the thumb and down toward the forearm. Hold for five seconds. You should feel the stretch in the base of the thumb, palm side. Repeat for the left thumb. Five repetitions, alternate thumbs.

Wrist Stretch

Hold the right hand in front of the body, palm facing out, fingertips up, fingers together. With the left hand, grasp the right hand's outstretched fingers and gently pull the fingers back toward the body. Hold for five seconds. You should feel the stretch in the wrist area. Repeat for the left wrist. Five repetitions, alternative wrists.

Wrist Circles

With hands in front of the body and elbows held at a comfortable angle, gently rotate the wrists. Five repetitions in each direction. Good work! Now you're ready to Craft in Comfort!

MIND WANDERING AND PATIENCE

If you learn nothing else from these pictures, you'll learn how important it is to concentrate and not give up if you have to start over - even if it is 3 or 4 times - ha ha. I am working on the Diagonal Lace Scarf from the instructions Ren gave us - like the beautiful brown scarf she showed us a couple of classes ago. I started out the evening before our last class. I then brought it in to ask Ren a couple of questions before getting started in the "harder" part. THEN, I actually sat down and started the harder part during class - wrong move. I did not thoroughly concentrate and realized later that evening that I messed up. So, I ripped it completely apart and started over. The next time, I got a little cocky and just kept right on going without paying close attention to see if what I was doing was correct. I looked at it and was proud of it - even showed it off to my husband - BUT, I didn't look close. I didn't realize I had made not 1, but 4 mistakes until I went to take a picture of my work in progress - to post it on a wonderful new knitting site: http://www.ravelry.com/, and when I went to take that picture, those 4 mistakes stood out like sore thumbs. SO, I ripped it apart again. THEN, while trying to explain to my husband why I had to keep ripping it apart, I was knitting and talking and MESSED IT UP AGAIN. So, to show this work in progress...........................

This was the first one that I was so proud of until I saw the extra - wandering holes where they shouldn't have been:

And, now, this is the latest of how it should look - I'm taking it very slow and I've explained to my husband if he asks me something or says something and I don't respond - I'm in the middle of a row and I'll talk to him when I finish that row!!!! Oh, and that hole that you see on the bottom right corner IS correct. :-)

The moral of this story is to have patience and don't let having to start over ruin it for you. Just take it out and learn from why you took it apart. Really, I could have kept going with the first one and probably no one would have known about those extra, wandering 4 holes, but I would have and it would have probably bugged me every time I wore it. If I'm going to do it, I want to do it right. And, if it doesn't bother you and it won't alter your project too much, then just keep going. You be the judge.

BEHIND THE SCENES

When you attend something, you really don't think about what it takes to get ready, or at least I don't. I go with enthusiasm and a "let's go" attitude!!!! With those thoughts, I decided to base this post on "getting ready".

I usually arrive at the Church early and make sure the door is open, the lights are on, the A/C is working, the tables are ready (well, almost) and then I wait. I love to just "breathe in" our Church - makes me feel so comforted by the presence of serenity. And, even though our knitting sessions get hectic, what better place to relax, be with friends and work with your hands.

Yesterday, while awaiting the arrival of our Knitting Souls, I walked around the Church and just enjoyed the beautiful morning. I love our Church and it's beautiful surroundings. That's when I decided to take a few pictures of the quiet moments before knitting begins and lead up to "what goes on":

Heleen, graciously donated one of her treasured knitting books. We decided to have everyone put their name in a hat (ummmm, actually a Longabeger bag) and see who the lucky recipient would be. I'll reveal the winner at the end of the post - stay tuned..........

I just had to show Ren lugging in her supplies - she does this faithfully each week and YES, I did help her as soon as I took the pictures - Andrea was there and helped too!!

We actually had homework on our two week hiatus - we had to knit a 6" square and magically turn it into a bunny. Ren threw hers together a day before the class and he was so cute. Well, I'll just tell you - I, as well as others, don't do well with instructions - so needless to say, my bunny is STILL a 6" square awaiting his magic to happen. As you'll see later in the pictures, Pam actually did make her bunny "happen"!!!! Ok Pam, do you think you could perform that magic for the rest of us if we slip you our squares? Please????

I love to stand back and just watch the group work together. Funny, I never really sit down and knit - I guess I'm afraid I'll miss a picture. I did try yesterday to sit down and knit on a scarf I started, but guess what - I could not concentrate. But that's ok because I enjoy doing the blog and for that I need pictures. AND, I get my projects going and take this time to ask Ren questions so that I can go home and quietly knit. That's just me.

Andrea is such a nice person. Yesterday she brought a bag of pocket crosses that she made and let everyone choose a color. They are very special and I want to share what was in with them - very comforting.

THE CROSS IN MY POCKET

I carry a cross in my pocket

A simple reminder to me

Of the fact that I am a Christian

No matter where I may be.

This little cross is not magic

Well, as you can see - our group of Knitting Souls is about more than just knitting. We have made new friends and are constantly learning from each other. Our lives have been enriched in many ways.

Oh, I didn't want to forget and thank Maggie for drawing the winning name out of the bag. I'm so glad Maggie is there to share in our follies - she is a great young lady.

CHEMO HATS DELIVERED

I failed to mention that I delivered the 62 chemo hats to the Kingsport Hematology Oncology Center Monday. They were thrilled and overwhelmed at receiving so many hats, as well as the beautiful variety of colors. They are always looking for positive ways to encourage their patients. What better way than a handmade hat that they know was made with love and prayers of well wishes!!!! Thanks to the many special hands that helped make this possible.

3 DAYS AFTER TODAY

HOMEWORK

Here you go - your homework!!!! If you have any questions, you can email me and if I don't know - I'll ask Ren!! :-)

1. KNITTED BUNNY:

Cast on approximately 28 - 30 stitches. The larger your needles - the less cast on stitches you'll need. You want to end up with about a six (6) inch square. You will knit the first row and then purl the second row. Continue the alternate rows until you have achieved your six (6) inch square.

2. Practice the following stitches by making a small swatch - you have the instructions for both of these stitches:

a. Practice ribbing: k2p2

b. Practice seed stitch k1p2. Second row - knit the purls and purl the knits.

3. Start deciding on a project that you would like to knit and go ahead and get the materials.

4. For those of you that are knitting the chemo caps, knit 8 inches and stop and we will change to the double pointed needles at the next class.

GOOD LUCK AND DON'T WORRY IF YOU GET STUMPED - WE WILL HELP YOU AT THE NEXT CLASS (at least Ren will - I'll take a picture of her doing it - LOL).

Quick Knitting Day

I don't know about the other knitters in our group, but it seems like I look forward to it all week and all of a sudden it has come and gone!!!! There were a total of 17 there today and when you get that many happy knitters together, the time just goes by in the wink of an eye. We welcomed another new member today and hope that she comes back, YES, that means you Kim!!!!

My daughter, Ashley, was here from Wytheville, VA - just to knit - LOL. Honestly, she is here visiting for a few days and one of the reasons she planned her visit to begin on Thursday was so that she could attend the knitting group. It was great being able to share this special time with her, as well as she was able to reconnect with old friends and meet some new. She even had the spotlight for a time describing how to cable.

We also moved the tables around so that instead of sitting in a straight line, everyone was facing each other - this made it much easier to see what everyone was working on and to communicate a little better. I think we will make an effort to move the tables around like this each time. We may need to add more tables - this is great.

Andrea surprised Ren with some early apples that we smartly displayed on the knitting/crocheting book!! Poor Andrea - it seems like I'm always make her pose - I just can't help it - she has the nicest smile.

Kim is concentrating big time on learning to knit. I hate we didn't have more time to spend with her. I did try to "peek" in and out and everywhere yesterday to watch over those that needed help - ha ha. I will try to help her more at our next group meeting, which is in 2 weeks - because of the 4th of July.

Now here's a crazy story that Ren was telling us - she always has such interesting information to share. She passed around a picture of a knitted Ferrari - yep - a knitted car!!!!!!

And, last but not least, here is the WONDERFUL cake recipe that Robin brought in. Thanks and also a BIG thanks to Heleen for bringing some tasty snacks today.

KEY LIME CAKE (YOU MUST TRY THIS - DON'T LET THE NAME FOOL YOU IF YOU AREN'T A KEY LIME PERSON)

CAKE:
1 BOX MOIST LEMON CAKE MIX
1 4-OUNCE LEMON INSTANT PUDDING MIX
4 EGGS
1 CUP VEGETABLE OIL
3/4 CUP WATER
1/4 CUP LIME JUICE

GLAZE:
2 CUPS POWDERED SUGAR
1/3 CUP LIME JUICE
2 TABLESPOONS WATER
2 TABLESPOONS MELTED BUTTER

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 10-inch bundt pan. Combine all cake ingredients. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed. Bake 50-60 minutes. Cool for 30 minutes in pan. Invert to cooling rack. Return back to clean bundt pan. Poke holes in warm cake and pour glaze over top of cake.

A MEETING OF MINDS

As our knitting group has again met and knitted, I've noticed that no longer are we a scattered group of strangers. Sure, there are many that know one another, but not quite everyone. Then there are those that are totally new, or should I say "were" new. Now, you can hear and see the relaxed laughter and camaraderie building around the table - exactly what Ren and I hoped would happen. It seems like we just get there and it's time to go. Everyone leaves with a cheery "see you next week" and even "I can't wait until next week" - so with that said, I thought I would post some pictures to show what everyone is working on.

Robin was working on learning to purl, her project was just starting when I was taking these pictures - so, I will have to stay alert and watch her progress. Also, through the kindness of her heart, she made a new cake recipe and brought it - it was a Key Lime Cake and was FABULOUS. She has promised to bring the recipe, which I will post on the blog. I honestly think it was one of the best cakes I had ever tasted - thanks Robin!!!!!!

Barbara finished her first dishcloth and was extremely proud. But, then she had other things to do today, so after kindly posing with her finished product, she skidaddled!!!! Hurry back next week Barbara!

Julie is just about finished her dishcloth and by the look of her smile, she is pleased with her accomplishment.

Dot is attending her first session of our group. She was unable to attend the last two and we are so glad she has joined. We will follow along with her efforts on her first dishcloth. Welcome Dot!!!

What more can I say about Julia and Rebecca except they look so cute and happy still working on their first dishcloths. Just keep at it - you guys will get it..............

Shirley is so determined and very, very talented. She is working on a vest and was deep in thought - maybe we all need to learn a little from her!!!!

Mary Ruth is almost finished her dishcloth and has done a fine job!!

Ruby decided to give me an action shot while continuing on hers - someone mentioned that hers looks like sherbert - very pretty colors.

Heleen is another of our very talented and experienced knitters and I do believe was trying to hide behind her work!!!!

Katherine sure seems to be enjoying herself and looking at her almost finished project, I can see why - I do believe she's got it!!

Maggie is doing a scarf in such a neat color combination - as you can see, she is very talented, just like her Mom (Hannah). Plus, look how it matches her shirt - what a great picture of Maggie!!!

Hannah's talent is also apparent as she displays her "story-telling" shawl that she is working on - can't wait to see it finished. And, yes, that's Robin in the background patiently practicing her purling.

And then we have my dear friend, Pam. Pam and I have been through a lot together and to me this is truly a blessing to end up together, healthy and happy, in a knitting group. What more could we want - oh yeah, Pam wants to finish her cherished beret.

Let me tell you about Andrea. Andrea, as you can tell, is doing a marvelous job with her dishcloth. But, at a later date, I'll show you what Andrea's real specialty is - crocheting. She has some absolutely gorgeous finished projects that she has shared with the group. We are so impressed with Andrea's work, that we have informed her that she will be the "helper-teacher" in the fall when we start our crochet class.

Ok - talk about talent...we have Debbie, who is blind, and has just finished off a prayer shawl. She was thrilled to be able to learn about binding off today. Since I've been running around with the camera, Ren wanted me to stand with Debbie, to prove once again that I was actually there. Ren was so nice and ordered a braille knitting book for Debbie and I've added a picture of Debbie demonstrating reading her book - which is simply amazing. She told us the secret is the sensitivity in the fingers. We'll be anxious to see what Debbie will work on next - I think she'll be planning on some basics to build strength in her knitting skills.

CLASS NUMBER TWO

Ren and I are so pleased with the attendance!!! What a good way to spend your morning - with a happy group of knitters. We had six new knitters and want-to-be knitters show up. By the time everyone left, all knew the basics. Great - a couple of more classes and everyone will be knitting up a storm. A few knitters were unable to attend, due to other commitments - hopefully all will be there next week. If not, that's the nice part - you come if you want and learn as much as you want. I have not knitted during these classes because I've been trying, with my limited abilities - I might add, to help Ren. However, now that everyone seems to be doing great, next week I think I'll bring something to work on.

Enjoy some action pictures - Ren took my picture to prove that I am actually in attendance, instead of always behind the scenes. Also, there are several knitters that I need to capture next week - if you aren't in these, then I probably cut part of your head off - sorry...........

THIS SHAWL WAS UNBELIEVABLY SOFT. THE PATTERN IS BASED ON THE SAME PATTERN AS THE DISHCLOTH PATTERN THAT EVERYONE IS LEARNING.

Here's a great picture of Heleen proving she loves to knit - check out those neat earrings (they say I love - with a heart - "2" knit). I believe she said that someone made them for her and that they were originally charms.

CHEMO CAPS

I knew as soon as I said I would only post once a week, that I would find something else to say!!!! After last Friday's class, I went home and eventually sat down to work with my cotton yarn and proceed with making a dishcloth. Yikes - lo and behold, my needles and yarn were not in my bag. And then it hit me. When we were cleaning up, my good friend helped and I remembered seeing her (yes, P, it's you - LOL) scooping up Ren's sample stitches on needles and yarn and knew right then that mine were accidently packed in with Ren's massive stash of supplies. Not a problem though - luckily, I grabbed another ball of cotton yarn, another set of needles and if you've read my blog, you know that I moved right along. So...........I ran a few errands this morning and one was stopping by the Extension office to retrieve my supplies (I had mentioned it to Ren yesterday at Church and she actually remembered seeing my stuff - I know how she knew - it had yellow in it - not one of Ren's favorite colors - so that quickly gave it away - ha ha). While there, Ren and I chatted about the upcoming class this Friday and before leaving she asked me when my next Dr.'s appointment was so that she could make sure to send the many chemo caps that caring people have made, along with me to hand out. I went ahead and took them today. I plan on talking to some of the nurses that I grew close to and let them decide how they want to hand them out. Maybe this will start a new "ministry" with them. I told Ren that they are always so kind to their patients and try to make them smile. This will provide another tool for them to use in easing your fears and concerns while going through chemo and it's after affects. Ren wasn't sure how many she had - there were bags everywhere - so I told her I would count them before delivering them. Thought you would like to see the effort that has been put into this. There are sixty-three (63). And, I can tell you, when you have lost your hair and someone has given you something they made to make you feel better, it truly means more than words can describe (plus it sure keeps your head warm)!!!!

READY, SET, KNIT

Our new knitting class/group has kicked off. We met at mine and Ren's Church Fellowship Hall at Rogersville Presbyterian Church (http://rogersvillepresbyterian.com/). The class consists of beginners, almost-proficient and extremely proficient knitters, thus being a nice combination - the more help available, the better. We also attracted a nice age variety. The class was advertised in our local newspaper, along with our Church Newsletter and Sunday Bulletins. We were very pleased to have a visitor from Holland - Caroline. She has been visiting her Sister-in-Law, Heleen - also from Holland. They are both very experienced knitters and also very interesting to talk to about their knitting - both starting as young girls. Caroline, hopefully our group will still be in existence when you come to visit next year and you can come back and be simply amazed at our accomplishments!!!!

Ren is "The Teacher" and I'm "The Assistant" (limited, I might add). With the first class consisting of 15, some of the more experienced knitters graciously assisted those that had never held knitting needles. I think by the time we left, there were more than likely confused knitters as well as excited knitters, hopefully all with visions of completed knitting projects dancing in their heads. Also, hopefully anticipating the arrival of next Friday's next class to move forward with their attempted knitting achievements.

We started with welcoming everyone there and then one of the ladies from our Church, Shirley, kindly spoke for a minute telling some of the history of our Church. If you get a minute, go to the link above and read about, we think it's quite interesting. Better yet, why don't you come visit one Sunday - you may decide to stay!!

After we welcomed everyone, Ren started with showing some items she has completed over the years - she is VERY talented and such a joy to listen to. Ren always puts a lot of enthusiasm in everything she does. This in itself will help keep the group going.
